_
A deciduous fruit tree popular in Chinese, Korean and Indian cultures.
Just like many fruits, not all jujubes are created equal and as such, the unique characteristics of this particular cultivar are as follows:
The space-saving growth habit of this particular variety of jujube is uniquely narrow at only 3′ – 4′ wide so for those of you with limited space to plant, this variety is perhaps more suited to that situation.
Also, it has a relatively uniform, natural branching structure that landscapers and architects alike describe as “a sculpted look”. An easy to grow, drought- tolerant fruit tree that provides a healthy-category fruit the wild form of which has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for centuries.
Additionally, it is like two types of fruit in one tree; when harvested and consumed fully ripe and fresh, it has similarities (both in flavor and texture), to various apples. However, when harvested full ripe and then slow-dried, it takes on the texture and flavor reminiscent of dates!.
While some jujube varieties do not present well in their dry form, the ‘Jin’ cultivar is beginning to be recognized and considered by some jujube enthusiasts as being excellent in both fresh and dried form. If dried properly,
it can be stored literally for years at room temperature, used to excellent effect as a tea (Korean folk call it “Techu Cha”), in baked goods, or simply on its own or in combination with dried almonds in a custom/gourmet trail mix for the road.
Enjoy!
